BCAM is a registered charity with a board of trustees and a membership of around 400 doctors and dentists working in the sphere of aesthetic medicine. All our members must meet stringent criteria including GMC registration and extensive experience in aesthetics. The progression pathway from Associate Member to Full Member includes a two-part exam which can be sat after two years’ membership and sets the gold standard for clinical excellence in aesthetic medicine.
The BCAM board of trustees adopted a revised definition of aesthetic medicine in September 2021 which clearly outlines what the sub speciality represents:
Aesthetic Medicine is a sub speciality of medical and surgical practice comprising a comprehensive group of health interventions, including preventative, minimally invasive and operative procedures involving human tissues, performed by duly qualified and registered medical, dental and advanced nurse practitioners, in order to maintain, improve or restore physical, psychological and/or social wellbeing of patients, using techniques which combine both medical and aesthetic considerations for the patient.
BCAM is a GMC Designated Body and members who meet certain criteria are able to benefit from BCAM’s revalidation and appraisal service. There is also a discounted specialist medical indemnity insurance policy, arranged exclusively for BCAM members.
BCAM carries out an Annual Clinical Review which collates data about members’ clinical activity, providing an insight into trends in the sector and influencing and informing government thinking.
Full Members are able to put themselves forward to sit on the Board of Trustees and can advertise their clinics on the BCAM website. Members also have access to the members area of the BCAM website which contains a wealth of useful reference documents and videos.
BCAM holds an annual conference with world-class speakers where members can network with colleagues plus many smaller free members-only events throughout the year exploring topical issues.
