NMC Update: New Prescribing Standards from 1 June 2025
BCAM fully supports the NMC’s decision to strengthen prescribing standards for non-surgical cosmetic procedures. From June, a face-to-face consultation will be required before prescribing POMs like botulinum toxin — a crucial step toward improving patient safety and professional accountability.
- A face-to-face consultation will be required before prescribing prescription-only medicines for non-surgical cosmetic procedures (e.g. botulinum toxin).
- Applies to nurse and midwife independent prescribers across the UK.
- This change supports safer, more accountable practice and aligns with other UK health regulators.
- NMC research identified: – A lack of public awareness that these treatments involve prescribed medicines
- Concerns about unregulated environments and non-qualified practitioners
- While some stakeholders favoured video consultations, the emphasis is on clinical safety and professional oversight.
- Clinics and prescribers must review protocols to ensure compliance by the deadline.
These changes apply to nurse and midwife independent prescribers across the UK.
We believe this move is a positive and necessary shift for the future of aesthetic medicine.
Full guidance now available via the NMC’s “Useful Information for Prescribers”.
